Ceramic art is a culturally rich yet technically demanding practice
that traditionally requires years of training, specialized tools, and expert knowledge, which makes it largely inaccessible to non-experts.
This paper introduces ARtisanAI, a novel AI- and AR-powered authoring tool that democratizes the process of ceramic design and
crafting for broader audiences. ARtisanAI combines generative AI
and augmented reality to support users through the entire designto-craft pipeline. Users begin by co-designing ceramics with AI,
which are converted into 3D models and projected into real-world
space via AR for interactive inspection and refinement. ARtisanAI
then provides step-by-step guidance as users physically shape and
paint clay as their chosen proposals, lowering the barrier to handson creation. We conducted a user study involving the design and
fabrication of 16 ceramic pieces. Feedback from participants uncovered ARtisanAI’s potential to enhance creative learning on 3D,
support public participation, and contribute to the preservation of
traditional ceramic heritage through accessible digital tools.
